About: The preface of the copy of “The Arabian Nights” that I have which printed in 1925 mentioned that no one knows who the original author of the Arabian Nights is. The Arabian Nights is composed of many tales and compiled by many narrators. The one narrator, Richard Burton, traveler and adventurer produced his edition in 1885 establish a definitive version for the English translation. These stories are of different ages, some are folk tales from as early as the eighth century after Christ and others are as late as the sixteenth century. There are many versions of the Arabian Nights in the original Arabic language.
My Experience: Recently I was recommended by a friend of mine to read “The Arabian Nights” because the stories are a classic. I went to my local library to pick out a copy and I was amazed to discover that this copy of the book was published in USA in 1925. There are nine stories in this book: The History of Codadad, Ali Baba & the Forty Thieves, The Story of Sinbad the Sailor, Aladdin & the Wonderful Lamp, Story of the Three Calenders, The Story of the King of the Ebony Isles, The Story of Prince Assad & The Fairy Perie Nashara, The Story of Baba Abdalla, and The Story of Ganem, The Slave of Love.
Ali Baba & the Forty Thieves is my favorite. This story reminds me not to underestimate maids because they could be as smart as anyone. Perhaps they were born into poverty and the only choice of career is working as maids in someone’s household. If they were to be born into riches or middle class society, their future outcome could be of high standing. Another reminder from this story teaches me to be generous and kind because life is usually good to those who are good to others. These stories are great to read for adults and children. I highly recommend it.
Pros: classic stories, Arabic fairy tales, has good moral teachings, eighth to sixteenth century old
Cons: none
I rate it 5 stars!
