Synopsis from Macmillan Publishers:

A high-stakes world of adventure, passion, danger, and betrayal . . . . From #1 New York Times-bestselling author Marissa Meyer comes the New York Times-bestselling YA novel Renegades.

Secret Identities.

Extraordinary Powers.

She wants vengeance. He wants justice.

The Renegades are a syndicate of prodigies—humans with extraordinary abilities—who emerged from the ruins of a crumbled society and established peace and order where chaos reigned. As champions of justice, they remain a symbol of hope and courage to everyone…except the villains they once overthrew.

Nova has a reason to hate the Renegades, and she is on a mission for vengeance. As she gets closer to her target, she meets Adrian, a Renegade boy who believes in justice—and in Nova. But Nova’s allegiance is to a villain who has the power to end them both.

About: Renegades is a young adult science fiction written by Marissa Meyer. It was published on 10/2/2018 by Square Fish, an imprint of Macmillan Publishers, paperback, 592 pages. The genres are young adult, fantasy, and science fiction. This book is intended for readers ages 12 to 18. There are three books to the renegades series: book 1 was Renegades, book 2 was Archenemies, and book 3 was Supernova. According to the publisher’s website, “Square Fish is a children’s book imprint representing the best of Farrar, Straus and Giroux, Henry Holt, and Roaring Brook backlists, but reformatted, repackaged, and reissued with a mass market children’s and teen audience in mind.” Please see below for more info about the author and publisher. (Here are my other reads and reviews from this author: Cinder, Scarlet, Cress, Winter, and Fairest)

My Experience: I started reading Renegades on 12/19/2019 and finished it on 12/31/2019. Another winner from Marissa Meyer because this book is an awesome read! As much as I loved The Lunar Chronicles, I loved reading this book too! The characters are well liked. I like Oscar’s humor, Adrian’s shyness, Ruby’s spunk, and Nova’s cleverness. Many superpowers are super cool! The villains’ living situations are interesting and it explains a lot how they normally portrayed in other books and movies. This book explained why the villains live in unfavorable locations. I loved observation skills and am glad Nova has it as well as her interest to invent unique weapons. I enjoyed the detailed examination of the characters of each other and especially how they are under pressure to reveal something but they appear to have a poker face so no one can read their thoughts. This story reminds readers that villains do have a good personality when life called for it like Cyanide and heroes can be such a bully when they have the upper hand like Genissa.

This book started with an italicize summary introducing prodigies, villains, heroes, and the chaos in between. Then the story begins with a prologue told in the third person point of view following Nova, 6. Her family is poor where her younger sister Evie, 11 months is feverish and there’s no medicine for her. Nova has a special gift that eventually saved her from the bad man that came to execute her family. The Renegades (superheroes) was supposed to come rescue her family but they didn’t instead it was uncle Ace, the villain leader that came. She grew up joining the villains to destroy the Renegades to avenge her family’s death. The story then begins ten years later with Nova going by Nightmare trying to assassinate the Renegade’s leader. The alternative view is Adrian, an adopted son of the Renegade’s leader. He has a secret superhero identity because he wants to investigate his birth mom’s untimely and unreasonable death. He also wants to capture Nightmare because she has said something to him that has been haunting him for a long time. Ten years before, there was a battle in which Nova’s uncle died and the Renegades won. Now ten years later, Nova is going on a secret mission to learn the secrets of her enemies.

Renegades is a fast paced read and well written. I loved that twist at the end. I wonder how Nightmare survive that blast from Ingrid during their setup. I hope to read her view on that in book 2 as well as the progress in the potential romance to come between the enemies. This book is innocent enough that I would let my middle grade reader to read because the romance is only at the liking stage and the violence aren’t brutal. I love diligent characters and Nova has it because she use her abundant time to learn new things. I enjoyed the fun at the fighting scenes with their banter. Adrian is swoon worthy. I also like how Oscar is at a disadvantage with his cane but he’s still strong to defend the helpless. I can’t wait to read the next book! I highly recommend everyone to read Renegades!

Pro: fast paced, page turner, humor, action and adventure,

I rate it 5 stars!
