Synopsis from Penguin Random House:
Dexter meets Mr. and Mrs. Smith in this wildly compulsive debut thriller about a couple whose fifteen-year marriage has finally gotten too interesting…
Our love story is simple. I met a gorgeous woman. We fell in love. We had kids. We moved to the suburbs. We told each other our biggest dreams, and our darkest secrets. And then we got bored.
We look like a normal couple. We’re your neighbors, the parents of your kid’s friend, the acquaintances you keep meaning to get dinner with.
We all have our secrets to keeping a marriage alive.
Ours just happens to be getting away with murder.

My Experience: I started re-reading My Lovely Wife on 3/13/2020 and finished it on 3/26/2020 at 12:56am. I did a blog tour for this book last year HERE. Reading this book again is still an interesting read. I like that this thriller has a new angle, it being a couple activity into the killing and then seeing how the killings affect their children. It’s definitely a great reminder when killers are portrayed as a normal person instead of a loner because then we’ll remember to look for everyone as a killer instead of the loners and awkward ones. I like the narrator, especially his relationship with his children.
This book is told in the first person point of view following a man pretending to be deaf and called himself Tobias. He made up a story on himself to fish for women. He went into a bar and left with a woman he just met. Then he, tennis instructor, came home to his wife of 15 years, Millicent, real estate agent and children, Rory 14 and Jenna 13. His wife asked him if he found a woman for them to play with and he said no even though she was. Then he went out to scout a new woman. The story slowly reveals the wife’s intentions and what they do together as husband and wife for their extracurricular activities. The wife appeared to have secrets even the husband doesn’t know and then the husband also keeps secrets from his wife. The story sprinkled bits of their past over different chapters, how he first met his wife and how things started happening. A dead body was recently found and the main character talked about how he found the woman for him and his wife to play, except the woman was only dead recently and not a year ago as he thought.
My Lovely Wife is very well written and a fast paced read. I like how secrets are slowly being revealed. Readers know as much as the narrator, which is not much at times because he is afraid to ask the details from his wife. I do like that he does his own research to gain some knowledge when his wife doesn’t volunteer the information. The wife is a mystery until the end. I like the twists and forgot about them so even re-reading, it’s great to discover them new again. The family aspects is good but at the same time lacks the thrill in a thriller for me. I still like reading this book and I do recommend everyone to read it as well!
Pro: fast paced, page turner, family, lies, secrets, couple activity
I rate it 4.5 stars!
