Synopsis from Macmillan Publishers:
Finlay Donovan is killing it . . . except, she’s really not. She’s a stressed-out single-mom of two and struggling novelist, Finlay’s life is in chaos: the new book she promised her literary agent isn’t written, her ex-husband fired the nanny without telling her, and this morning she had to send her four-year-old to school with hair duct-taped to her head after an incident with scissors.
When Finlay is overheard discussing the plot of her new suspense novel with her agent over lunch, she’s mistaken for a contract killer, and inadvertently accepts an offer to dispose of a problem husband in order to make ends meet . . . Soon, Finlay discovers that crime in real life is a lot more difficult than its fictional counterpart, as she becomes tangled in a real-life murder investigation.
Fast-paced, deliciously witty, and wholeheartedly authentic in depicting the frustrations and triumphs of motherhood in all its messiness, hilarity, and heartfelt moment, Finlay Donovan Is Killing It is the first in a brilliant new series from YA Edgar Award nominee Elle Cosimano.

My Experience: I started reading and listening to an audiobook for Finlay Donovan is Killing It on 4/1/2022 and finished it on 4/3/2022. I enjoyed the audiobook for this story very much. The narrator did a great job with voices of different characters both adults and kids as well as with accents. The narrator’s reading speed was extra excellent especially when she’s talking to Vero and Steven. I loved the humor! The main character Finlay was a fun one. She’s bitter because her ex-husband and her cop sister didn’t think her writing job was real. Bills piled up high and she’s living life on the edge. Her ex-husband’s about to marry his mistress. He has a nice house in his new life with friends that helped him suck the life out of her even more through custody battle. She had to pay him rent to continue living at their house from when they were married. She hardly had time to write her novel and the deadline is looming. All the reasons to make her want to consider doing the unthinkable when a woman offered to pay her 50 grand to rid of her bad husband. I liked Vero too. Her character was smart, witty, and diligent. I enjoyed her positive attitude and her quick thinking.
This book started with Finlay, 31, suspense romance writer as she juggled two kids (2 and 4) at breakfast time while waiting for the nanny who’s late. She also busied herself getting ready to meet with her agent for a book that she’s late writing for and there’s a big chance she won’t make it on time because her daughter Delia, 4, decided to cut her own hair and hurt herself before preschool starts. She’s divorced because her ex-husband cheated on her. Her ex-husband Steven threatened to get permanent custody of their kids because she couldn’t pay her bills on time. He told her to get a real job to pay for real bills and he also fired the nanny. Then as she was finally meeting with her agent discussing the contents of her book, a stranger misunderstood Finlay for a hitman. She left a note for Finlay to rid of her husband who has been doing bad things and she was willing to pay 50 grand. Finlay was considering how this money could solve many of her problems. She didn’t plan on doing anything but she happened to look him up and went to see how he was like. Then she caught him in action and reacted to one thing and then another. Soon, she ended up in situations she hadn’t planned on being in.
Finlay Donovan is Killing It was well written and narrated. This story definitely reeled me in and left me ignoring my family for the weekend as I continued enjoying the audiobook. My son abandoned our badminton game because he accused me of paying attention to my audiobook more than our game. Well! He wasn’t wrong. I just loved the twists. I couldn’t tell where the story was going and thought how will Finlay get herself out of this situation now. Then she found herself in another situation and I thought oh no! I just couldn’t put down the read. I loved how she retraced herself and solve her own problems. The bantering were great! The ending left a cliffhanger that I’m glad I don’t have to wait because I can start reading and listening to the audiobook for the second book tonight! A book I stayed up until 3am on a Friday night for, I highly recommend everyone to read and listen to this book!
I rate it 5 stars!
